A government official in New Caledonia ordered the evacuation of coastal communities on Friday (19 May) after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake in the Pacific Ocean generated a tsunami warning.
Warning sirens had been sounded, and residents were ordered to flee locations along the island’s coastline.
On Friday (19 May), roughly three hours after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the region, the United States Tsunami Warning Centre lifted an advisory for the South Pacific.
