China has issued the highest warning as super typhoon Saola threatens Hong Kong and other important manufacturing centers in Guangdong province with winds of more than 200 kph (125 mph).

Forecasters issued a typhoon red alert as Saola, which is now located around 315 kilometers southeast of Guangdong province, is expected to travel northwest across the South China Sea at a speed of roughly 10 kilometers per hour (6 miles per hour).

Saola will make landfall along the coast on Friday (01 September) somewhere between Huilai County in Guangdong and Hong Kong.

Hong Kong’s government announced that the city would raise its severe wind warning, effectively bringing the city to a halt, with most companies and the stock market closed.

Despite the fact that Friday (01 September) is the first day of school for many, the Hong Kong government has announced that all schools will be closed.

According to Hong Kong’s observatory, heavy rain and violent winds are forecast, while the city’s water level is expected to “rise appreciably” with potential serious flooding.

Several important train lines in China have been suspended, and trains from Shanghai to Guangdong have been halted.
