The UK is set to experience a significant rise in temperatures as a blast of hot air from the Iberian Peninsula brings an intense heatwave, with temperatures potentially reaching 40°C in some regions. This warm spell is expected to begin within days, with heat levels soaring for three consecutive days, meeting the Met Office’s threshold for a heatwave.
According to the latest weather maps, the hot weather is likely to start as early as next week, following a period of heavy rain and strong winds that have plagued the country in the aftermath of Storm Lilian. Cities in southern Europe, such as Seville, are already experiencing sweltering temperatures, with forecasts predicting highs of 41°C from 04 September. Similarly, Lisbon has seen temperatures peak at 38°C. This intense heat is forecasted to drift northward, bringing unseasonably warm conditions to Britain.
Several regions across southern England are expected to see temperatures climb to around 30°C from 05 September until 07 September. London and Southampton are predicted to experience the highest temperatures, particularly around 6 p.m. (local time) on 05 September, with the warmth spreading to other areas such as Birmingham, Worcester, Cardiff, and Leeds by the following day.
On 07 September, the weather outlook remains consistent, with Southampton’s temperatures anticipated to soar to 31°C. The Met Office, which defines a heatwave as a period when daily maximum temperatures meet or exceed a specified threshold for at least three consecutive days, has forecasted stable conditions for the southwestern areas of the UK from 01 September to 10 September. The forecast suggests that high pressure will dominate during this period, leading to more settled weather, with daytime temperatures near or slightly above average, although nights may remain cool.
This heatwave comes as a welcome change following the recent storms, and many in the UK will be looking forward to the respite from the unsettled weather. However, the abrupt shift to high temperatures also serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of British weather.
