According to the reports on Friday (15 November), Tropical Storm Sara made landfall on the northeastern coast of Honduras on Thursday (14 November), unleashing intense rainfall that threatens catastrophic flooding across parts of Central America. The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned of “life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flash flooding and mudslides” through the weekend as the storm progresses inland.
In response to Sara’s arrival, Honduras’ emergency management agency (COPECO) has issued a red alert for the Caribbean departments of Islas de la Bahia, Atlantida, Colon, and Gracias a Dios, urging residents to evacuate high-risk areas. President Xiomara Castro announced that emergency services have been mobilized to handle the storm’s impact, encouraging citizens to seek safe shelter away from rivers and flood-prone areas.
The NHC predicts that Sara will continue to move slowly near Honduras’ northern coast over the next few days, potentially bringing up to 30 inches of rain in isolated areas. Such rainfall could worsen flooding and landslides, with heavy impacts anticipated not only in Honduras but also in Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and parts of Mexico.
Additional storm warnings and alerts have been issued for Panama and Costa Rica, which recently suffered fatalities related to storm-related flooding. Sara is expected to approach Belize and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula by late weekend, where authorities closely monitor the storm’s potential to cause further destruction.
