According to the reports on Monday (18 November), Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon’s Tyr region have resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people and injuries to 48 others, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health. These strikes come weeks after earlier Israeli military operations in the area, which caused injuries and damage to several heritage sites. The recent escalation adds to the ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
The strikes followed the killing of Hezbollah’s media relations chief, Mohammed Afif, in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described Afif as a senior operative involved in Hezbollah’s terrorist activities. According to the IDF, Afif played a crucial role in propaganda and psychological operations, glorifying terrorism and inciting violence against Israel.
The strikes and Afif’s assassination occurred in the wake of increased tensions, including an attack on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s private residence. Three suspects were arrested for throwing flares at Netanyahu’s home, an incident that followed a Hezbollah drone attack earlier in October. The drone strike caused minor damage to Netanyahu’s residence but heightened security concerns.
