Fresh attack in Manipur fuels ethnic tensions

According to the reports Wednesday (1 January 2025), a fresh attack occurred in Manipur’s Kadangband area in Imphal West district early Wednesday (1 January 2025), with militants firing several rounds and hurling bombs from their hill positions in Kangpokpi district. Village volunteers retaliated with gunfire, and additional security forces were deployed to control the situation. No injuries were reported, but several villagers fled to safer locations. The area has witnessed repeated militant attacks since violence erupted in May 2023.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ 2023-24 report, Manipur accounted for 77% of violent incidents in the northeastern region during 2023, with 187 out of 243 reported cases. Ethnic strife between the Meitei majority and Kuki tribes fueled these incidents, leading to a rise in civilian and security casualties compared to the previous year. The conflict has deepened divisions between the communities, exacerbating the ongoing crisis.

Recent confrontations include the dismantling of “community bunkers” in the Saibol-Twiching area by central forces, sparking protests and injuries. At least 40 people, including a woman who lost an eye, were wounded during clashes in Kangpokpi district. Tribal leaders allege these bunkers were defensive structures against attacks, accusing central forces of partiality and excessive force in their removal. This operation has heightened tensions and vulnerability among the Kuki population.

Kuki leaders and women’s groups have demanded an impartial probe into the actions of security forces and accountability for the use of lathis and tear gas against protesters. The Kuki Women Union claims central forces have failed to prevent attacks against their communities, while tribal groups criticize the forces’ alleged bias favoring Meiteis. Despite security presence, ethnic tensions persist, with the conflict leaving over 250 dead since May 2023.

This design is steller! You most certainly know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Excellent job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
