Poland scrambled its military aircraft on Wednesday (15 January) in response to Russia’s large-scale missile attack on Ukraine, particularly targeting its western regions. The Polish military confirmed the activation of additional fighter jets and heightened readiness of ground-based air defense and radar systems to protect its border areas. These measures reflect Poland’s commitment to safeguarding its territory amidst escalating regional tensions.

The Operational Command of Poland’s Armed Forces emphasized full readiness for immediate action. They continue to monitor the evolving situation closely and remain on high alert, ensuring all available forces and resources are mobilized effectively. Poland’s proactive approach underscores the gravity of the missile threat and its potential cross-border implications.

The missile strikes on Wednesday (15 January) followed a pattern of recent Russian aggression aimed at critical Ukrainian infrastructure. Similar attacks occurred on December 25, 2024, prompting Poland to scramble its aircraft then as well. Such incidents highlight Russia’s ongoing strategy of targeting Ukraine’s energy systems and intensifying conflict near Poland’s borders.

The international community has repeatedly condemned Russia’s attacks, citing their destabilizing effects on regional security. Officials from the Netherlands and Latvia previously criticized Moscow’s actions, stressing that these assaults show a lack of interest in pursuing peace. Poland’s defensive measures reflect broader concerns about the conflict’s spillover effects on neighboring countries.
