According to the reports on Wednesday (19 February), Hamas and Israel have reached an agreement for the release of six living hostages and the return of four bodies from Gaza. Among the deceased are Ariel and Kfir Bibas, two young boys who have become national symbols in Israel. Their family remains in turmoil, stating they have yet to receive official confirmation of their deaths. The hostages were taken during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which led to the ongoing Gaza war.
The truce, which began last month, initially included the release of 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for over 1,100 Palestinian prisoners. So far, 19 hostages have been freed, with 14 remaining, eight of whom Israel says are dead. Hamas confirmed that the six living hostages would be released on February 22, while the bodies of the Bibas family and others would be returned on February 15. The Israeli government acknowledged the deal following indirect negotiations in Cairo.
The truce remains fragile, with both sides accusing each other of violations. Hamas has claimed that the Bibas children and their mother were killed in an Israeli airstrike in November 2023, though Israel has not verified this. Meanwhile, Israel’s military has urged the public to ignore unverified rumors regarding the hostages. Families of those awaiting release, like Tal Shoham’s relatives, have expressed cautious optimism while hoping for their loved ones’ safe return.
As negotiations continue, broader discussions about Gaza’s future are taking shape. Saudi Arabia is set to host key Arab leaders to propose a reconstruction plan that keeps Palestinians on their land. Israel, however, insists on the complete demilitarization of Gaza and the removal of Hamas. With the first phase of the truce expiring on March 1, Qatar has emphasized that only Palestinians can determine their political representation and future leadership.
