According to the reports on Monday (18 August), Egyptian and Qatari mediators are pushing for a Gaza ceasefire, with a “positive announcement” possible later in the day. The plan includes a 60-day truce, the release of 10 hostages, and indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel on troop withdrawal and a long-term agreement. A US guarantee would support the process, while Israel and the United States are reviewing the proposal.

The proposal also addresses humanitarian concerns, allowing the flow of aid into Gaza, where civilians face starvation and disease. Israeli troops would move away from populated areas, and the plan includes the exchange of Palestinian prisoners and the return of the remains of deceased hostages. The goal is to prevent an imminent Israeli ground assault on Gaza city.

Despite the looming offensive, many Palestinians remain in Gaza city rather than evacuate, recalling the trauma of previous displacements. Individuals like Aya Al Shandaghli described severe hardships during past forced relocations, vowing not to leave their homes again. Others have nowhere left to go, as much of Rafah, Khan Younis, and central Gaza have been destroyed.

Israel continues to prepare for a military operation in Gaza, emphasizing its aim to defeat Hamas and maintain security control over the enclave. The UN and other humanitarian agencies are strengthening their presence rather than evacuating staff. The situation highlights the tension between immediate civilian protection, military objectives, and ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire.
