According to the reports on Friday (22 August), New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency as Hurricane Erin continues to create dangerous conditions along the East Coast. Although the storm is expected to remain hundreds of miles offshore, its indirect impacts are being strongly felt across the Jersey Shore. Sustained winds reaching up to 50 mph, waves as high as 17 feet, and floodwaters rising to 3 feet in vulnerable areas have prompted urgent warnings from officials.

Authorities have cautioned residents about high surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding, while also stressing the increased risk of beach erosion. Many beaches have been closed to swimming, and people are urged to avoid the water entirely. Evacuation protocols have been highlighted, with local governments reminding citizens to monitor forecasts and take safety measures seriously.

Communities along the Jersey Shore are preparing by moving vehicles to higher ground and securing outdoor property, including boats and docks. In Sea Bright, residents are relying on rock barriers and reinforced bulkheads installed after Superstorm Sandy to help reduce storm impacts. Despite the preparations, locals remain on high alert as tides are expected to worsen due to the new moon phase.

The storm has already caused visible damage in several towns, with winds toppling lifeguard posts and powerful waves flooding streets in Wildwood. At Manasquan Inlet Beach, massive waves pounded the shore, while strong gusts blew sand into the faces of beachgoers. Business owners like Michael Parziale, who endured Superstorm Sandy, are taking no chances, moving property and vehicles to safer areas as they brace for Erin’s continuing effects.
