According to the reports on Monday (9 December), Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country after opposition forces captured Damascus, ending his 24-year rule. Russian state media reported that Assad was granted asylum in Moscow on humanitarian grounds. The swift military offensive by Syrian rebels began on Wednesday (27 November), culminating in the takeover of the capital and several key cities. Rebel leaders announced plans for a transitional government while ensuring the safety of Russian military bases in Syria.

The US launched extensive airstrikes on ISIS positions in central Syria, using B-52 bombers, F-15 fighter jets, and A-10 attack aircraft. Over 75 targets, including camps and operatives, were hit to prevent the terror group from exploiting the power vacuum. US Central Command warned ISIS against attempting a resurgence amid Syria’s unstable political environment. Meanwhile, Iranian officials expressed concerns about escalating conflicts involving regional powers and Turkey.

Israel conducted military operations in Syria’s southern regions, advancing into Al-Qunaitrah for the first time in five decades. Israeli forces targeted former regime positions, Iranian-backed groups, and weapon depots in Deir Ezzor province. Tensions rose as Israeli tanks and armored vehicles moved close to civilian homes, prompting warnings from regional observers about a potential wider conflict.

International diplomatic efforts intensified, with Russia calling for emergency UN Security Council consultations on December 9. UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged a focus on Syria’s reconstruction, while US President Joe Biden described Assad’s fall as a “fundamental act of justice.” Arab and European leaders stressed the need for an inclusive political transition to stabilize the country. Border closures by Lebanon and Jordan further underscored regional security concerns.
