According to the reports on Friday (27 December), Bello Turji, a notorious terrorist leader, has issued a grave warning to residents of Zamfara and Sokoto States, accusing them of collaborating with the Nigerian military in the capture of his key lieutenants. In a video released on Christmas Day, Turji vowed to make 2025 a year of violent reprisals if his demands for the release of his detained allies were not met. He specifically named the communities of Shinkafi, Isa, and Zurmi as targets of his threats.

The Nigerian military recently announced the capture of top members of Turji’s network, including Bako Wurgi, Abubakar Muhammad, and Hamisu Sale, during an operation on Friday (20 December). The military claimed Wurgi succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained in a firefight, a claim Turji refuted. He alleged the arrests occurred in markets and hospitals and that the detained individuals were elderly and innocent.

In his video, Turji issued an ultimatum to communities, warning of severe consequences if his demands were ignored. He threatened escalated violence, including kidnappings and the destruction of towns, for any noncompliance. Declaring his intent to turn any defiant community “into rubble,” he left no room for negotiation without the release of his “brothers.”

This latest development highlights the escalating security challenges in northern Nigeria, where Turji’s network has been a persistent threat. The Nigerian military’s recent successes in capturing his lieutenants demonstrate progress, but Turji’s retaliatory threats underscore the ongoing volatility. The situation calls for intensified efforts to secure affected communities and disrupt terrorist operations.
