The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has released a new image of the moon that depicts its surface in incredible detail. The photograph was acquired by India’s third Moon mission spacecraft “Chandrayaan-3” a day after it entered lunar orbit on August 5.
The image was captured by the Lander Horizontal Velocity Camera (LHVC) onboard Chandrayaan-3 and depicts parts of the moon such as the Oceanus Procellarum (Ocean of Storms) and craters such as Aristarchus and Eddington.
The images were shared on Twitter (now known as X) on August 10 and have since received over 1.7 million views and 40,000 ‘likes’ on the microblogging network.
On July 14, Chandrayaan-3 was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
On August 23, it is expected to settle on the moon. India will go down in history as the fourth country to successfully execute a soft landing on the moon. ISRO is performing a series of maneuvers to gradually decrease Chandrayaan-3’s orbit and place it over the lunar poles as the mission progresses.
