According to the reports on Thursday (21 August), a fire erupted in the southern Russian city of Novoshakhtinsk after a drone strike targeted an industrial site. The city is home to a large oil refinery, making it a significant hub in Russia’s energy network. Officials stated that emergency teams were dispatched to contain the blaze swiftly.
According to Yury Slyusar, the acting governor of the Rostov region, preliminary reports indicated that no one was injured in the incident. He noted that the fire broke out at one of the city’s industrial facilities but refrained from specifying which site was struck. The refinery itself, however, is seen as a likely target given its importance.
The Novoshakhtinsk refinery has a processing capacity of around 5 million metric tons of oil per year, equal to about 100,000 barrels per day. Much of its fuel is sold for export, making it strategically important for Russia’s energy supply chain. Any disruption at this facility could affect both domestic supply and international trade.
This latest strike comes amid a broader campaign by Ukraine to target Russian oil infrastructure. Since early August, Ukrainian drones have hit multiple refineries, including those in Novokuibyshevsk, Syzran, Ryazan, and Volgograd. The attacks reflect Kyiv’s efforts to weaken Moscow’s energy sector, which plays a central role in funding Russia’s war efforts.
