At least 10 people have died following severe flooding in Agartala, the capital city of Tripura, after heavy rainfall caused the Gomati River to overflow as per reports from Thursday (22 August). The floods have forced over 34,100 people from 6,620 families to seek shelter in 346 relief camps set up across eight districts in the state, according to an official from the State Emergency Operations Center.
The state revenue department confirmed that ten fatalities were caused by drowning and landslides, while two people sustained injuries. In response to the disaster, the Tripura government has declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Thursday and Friday, 22-23 August.
The flooding has severely impacted areas including Dharmanagar in North Tripura, Kailashahar and Kumarghat in Unakoti district, Kamalpur, Longtraivalley, and Gandacherra in Dhalai district, Bishalgarh and Sonamura in Sepahijala district, Teliamura and Khowai in Khowai district, Udaipur, Karbook, and Amarpur in Gomati district, and Sabroom, Belonia, and Santirbazaar in South Tripura district. Additionally, extensive parts of the Sadar and Jirania sub-divisions in West Tripura district, including Agartala city, have experienced significant waterlogging and flood-like conditions.
Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to evacuate people from the most vulnerable areas as water levels in several rivers continue to rise above the danger mark. Landslides have been reported in multiple locations, with national highways and other key roads blocked due to fallen trees triggered by the relentless rainfall. The situation remains critical as the state government and emergency services continue their efforts to manage the disaster and provide relief to those affected.
