Hamas is set to release four female Israeli soldiers on Saturday (25 January) as part of a prisoner exchange under a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the 15-month-long war in Gaza. The soldiers, Karina Ariev, Daniela Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Albag, were abducted from an observation post near Gaza during Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The release will involve the Red Cross transferring the soldiers from Hamas to Israeli forces, where they will be reunited with their families and receive medical care.
The agreement will also see 200 Palestinian prisoners freed, including 120 serving life sentences and 80 with other lengthy terms. This exchange will follow a previous swap under the ceasefire, where three Israeli civilians were released in exchange for 90 Palestinian prisoners. Hamas has identified the four Israeli hostages for Saturday’s swap, but Israel has yet to comment officially on the matter.
The ceasefire agreement, brokered by Qatar and Egypt with support from the United States, outlines a phased approach to releasing hostages and reducing tensions. During the first six-week phase, Hamas has committed to releasing 33 hostages, including vulnerable individuals, in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Israeli troops will also withdraw from some positions in Gaza, with further negotiations to address remaining hostages and Israel’s military presence in the region.
The conflict, which began after Hamas’s October 7 attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and abducted over 250 hostages, has devastated Gaza, leaving over 47,000 Palestinians dead. As of now, 94 hostages remain in Gaza, with some declared dead in absentia by Israeli authorities. The prisoner exchanges and ceasefire mark a rare moment of diplomacy amidst a devastating and prolonged conflict.
