According to the reports on Monday (6 January), Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has raised global alarm, including in India, where the first case has been reported in Bengaluru, Karnataka. An 8-month-old child was diagnosed with the virus after being admitted to a private hospital with a fever. The Karnataka Health Department confirmed the case and alerted the Union Health Ministry. While the strain’s connection to the outbreak in China remains unclear, the virus is known for rapidly infecting people of all ages.
HMPV, an airborne respiratory disease, spreads through droplets, direct contact, and contaminated surfaces. Common symptoms include fever, cough, nasal congestion, and breathing difficulties, primarily affecting young children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. The virus has drawn comparisons to the coronavirus, heightening public concern due to its potentially severe impact.
State governments across India, including Delhi, Kerala, and Maharashtra, have issued advisories to promote awareness and caution. The Maharashtra government conducted a high-level meeting to address the threat, urging citizens to stay vigilant without succumbing to panic. Precautions include avoiding crowded places and practicing good hygiene.
Global reports of increasing HMPV cases, particularly from China, underline the urgent need for robust preventive measures. While India has seen only a single confirmed case so far, health authorities remain watchful to prevent further spread. Public cooperation in following health guidelines will be crucial in containing the virus’s impact.
