The IRS issued a warning on Monday (03 July) about a new refund fraud being delivered to taxpayers.
According to the tax department, the letter, which comes in a cardboard envelope, is intended to mislead consumers into believing they are owed a refund.
According to the agency, the letter has an IRS masthead and is “in relation to your unclaimed refund.”
Although the letter includes contact information, the phone number provided is not an IRS number.
The IRS requests that letter recipients give photos of their driver’s licenses, which it says can be used by identity thieves.
People are also required to provide their telephone number, bank routing information, Social Security number, and kind of bank account.
