According to the reports on Wednesday (2 July), U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday (1 July) that Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions for finalizing a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza. The proposed ceasefire aims to create a window for broader negotiations to end the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Trump stated that Qatar and Egypt, who have been actively mediating, will deliver the final proposal to Hamas.
In a social media post, Trump emphasized that this is the best opportunity for peace and warned Hamas that rejecting the offer would lead to worse consequences. He expressed hope that, for the good of the Middle East, Hamas would accept the deal. Trump also mentioned that his team had a productive meeting with Israeli officials regarding the situation in Gaza.
While Trump did not name the representatives involved in the talks, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance were reportedly scheduled to meet with Israeli adviser Ron Dermer. Trump also revealed he would meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House next Monday to push for the swift implementation of the ceasefire and the release of hostages.
The Gaza war began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on 07 October 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel’s military response has resulted in the deaths of over 56,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry, and led to mass displacement and a humanitarian crisis. While Hamas has shown willingness to release hostages in exchange for an end to the war, it has refused to disarm—one of Israel’s main conditions for peace.
