Israel launched a large-scale military operation against Iran on Friday (13 June), targeting nuclear facilities, missile factories, and senior military commanders. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the beginning of “Operation Rising Lion,” calling it a decisive moment to eliminate what he described as an existential threat. Explosions were reported at Iran’s Natanz uranium enrichment site, and the elite Revolutionary Guards confirmed the death of their top commander, Hossein Salami. Strikes also hit Tehran, reportedly killing nuclear scientists and civilians, including children.
In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the attack, promising Israel would face a “bitter fate.” Iran’s military spokesperson accused both Israel and the U.S. of complicity, though Washington strongly denied involvement. The Israeli military said Iran had enough enriched material for 15 nuclear bombs and that its recent activities had forced preemptive action. Israeli officials stated that dozens of strategic targets were hit and Mossad had also conducted sabotage operations inside Iran.
Following the strikes, Israel declared a state of emergency and closed Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport, warning of imminent missile and drone retaliation. Defence Minister Israel Katz and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir confirmed troop mobilization across all borders. The U.S., while distancing itself from the operation, prepared for regional contingencies, including possible evacuations of American citizens. The State Department advised U.S. personnel in Israel to shelter in place, and oil prices surged amid global market uncertainty.
U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized that Iran must never obtain a nuclear bomb and expressed hope for diplomatic talks, which are still scheduled in Oman. The United Nations called for restraint, warning of the high risk of a broader conflict. While Israel insists new intelligence justified the strikes, U.S. intelligence assessments reportedly remain unchanged, suggesting Iran is not currently pursuing a nuclear weapon. The situation marks a dangerous escalation in an already volatile region, with potentially far-reaching global consequences.
