As per reports on Friday (20 September), Israel conducted heavy airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, shortly after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah vowed retribution for deadly explosions targeting the group’s communication devices. The explosions killed 37 people and injured thousands, which Hezbollah blamed on Israel, though Israel has not confirmed involvement. The attacks mark one of the largest Israeli bombardments since border clashes began last October.
Nasrallah described the explosions as a “massacre” and “act of war,” promising Israel would face punishment in unexpected ways. As he delivered his address, Israeli jets flew over Beirut, sending residents into a panic. Israel claimed to have hit around 100 launchers and terrorist infrastructure in retaliation for Hezbollah’s rocket attacks on northern Israel.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated in recent weeks, with exchanges of fire killing hundreds in Lebanon, mostly fighters, and dozens in Israel, including soldiers. The violence has forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes on both sides of the border. International mediators continue to push for a resolution to prevent a full-scale war between the two powers, with Hezbollah maintaining its support for Hamas in Gaza.
Amid these developments, Lebanon filed a complaint at the United Nations, accusing Israel of cyber-terrorism and war crimes. The situation has drawn global attention, with the U.S. calling for restraint and Iran warning of a “crushing response” to Israel’s actions. Despite efforts by diplomats, the regional fallout from the war in Gaza threatens to widen the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
