The Lebanese army issued a strong condemnation on Friday (6 June) against Israeli airstrikes targeting Beirut’s southern suburbs, warning that such actions could jeopardize its cooperation with the international committee overseeing the ceasefire that ended the 14-month Israel-Hezbollah war. The army stated that Israel’s refusal to coordinate and its continued violations are undermining both the role of the army and the effectiveness of the ceasefire monitoring mechanism.

The Israeli military claimed the strikes targeted underground Hezbollah drone production facilities and were preceded by warnings for evacuation. The attacks occurred on the eve of Eid al-Adha, a significant Muslim holiday, prompting heightened tensions. Lebanese forces attempted to work with the ceasefire committee and inspected the targeted areas following Israel’s warning, but Israel reportedly rejected their involvement.

The U.S.-led committee monitoring the ceasefire includes representatives from Lebanon, Israel, France, the U.S., and UN peacekeepers (UNIFIL). The Lebanese army warned that Israel’s ongoing violations and dismissive stance toward the committee could compel them to halt cooperation in future truce-related inspections. This raises concerns over the long-term sustainability of the fragile ceasefire.

Since the end of the Israel-Hezbollah war in late 2024, Israel has continued near-daily airstrikes in Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah operatives. Over 4,000 people, including many civilians, died during the conflict, and hundreds more have been killed or injured by Israeli strikes since the ceasefire. While international pressure mounts on Hezbollah to disarm, the group insists it will not do so until Israel halts its air raids and withdraws from disputed border territories.
