According to the reports on Monday (9 December), The Meteorological Department has issued an advisory for naval and fishing communities operating in the South-west Bay of Bengal due to a developing Low-Pressure Area. This weather system, currently in the southeast Bay of Bengal, is expected to move west-northwestward and reach the southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu coasts around Wednesday (11 December).

As the system progresses, showers are forecast in sea areas from Batticaloa to Kankasanthurai via Trincomalee. Additionally, sea areas extending from Colombo to Hambantota via Galle may experience showers or thundershowers in the evening or at night. These conditions could cause operational challenges for vessels in the region.

Winds in the sea areas around the island will be northeasterly, with speeds ranging from 30 to 40 kmph. However, wind gusts could increase significantly during thundershowers, causing very rough sea conditions. Maritime operators are urged to monitor updates and take necessary precautions.

The advisory highlights the possibility of temporarily strong gusty winds and turbulent seas due to thundershowers associated with the Low-Pressure Area. Fishing and naval communities are encouraged to remain vigilant and avoid risky activities in the affected sea areas until the weather stabilizes.
