According to police, women in India’s northeastern state of Manipur invaded the home of the primary suspect in a sexual assault case that has angered the nation.
The culprit allegedly took two tribal women onto the streets in May and then incited a mob to rape and parade them naked, police said on Friday (21 July), as ethnic hostilities rocked the remote state’s predominantly Hindu Meitei and predominantly Christian Kuki-Zo populations.
The sexual assault occurred over two months ago, but it received national attention this week after a short video went viral on social media.
The main suspect, Khuirem Herodas, a Meitei, was apprehended on Thursday (20 July).
Three other people were arrested, and police claimed they were looking for at least 30 more people engaged in the crime.
