According to the reports on Wednesday (19 February), security forces in Manipur have arrested five militants from three banned outfits and a sympathiser in a two-day operation across multiple districts. The arrests took place in Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, and Kakching, targeting members of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), PREPAK (PRO), and Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG).
Among those arrested was Waikhom Ibungo Meitei, a PLA member accused of extorting the public and officials. Another PLA cadre, Thokchom Ajit Singh, was detained in Bishnupur. Meanwhile, Salam Sitoljit Singh and Thokchom Sanathoi Singh, both linked to PREPAK (PRO), were apprehended in Imphal West and Bishnupur, respectively, for alleged extortion activities.
In Kakching district, police arrested Naorem Premkanta Singh, a militant from Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG), who was also involved in extortion. Additionally, security forces detained Romeo Laishram, a sympathiser of the same group, from his residence in Imphal West. Authorities seized a pistol, a magazine, and cartridges from his possession.
The crackdown highlights the ongoing efforts of security forces to curb insurgent activities in Manipur. With multiple groups engaged in extortion and illegal operations, authorities continue to strengthen their vigilance across the region.
