Speculation about the fate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad arose after a Syrian Air flight reportedly carrying him vanished near Homs on Sunday (08 December). The Ilyushin Il-76T aircraft departed Damascus airport during a rebel offensive that seized the capital, but its abrupt altitude drop and disappearance from radar suggest a crash or possible attack. Flightradar24 data revealed a sudden descent from 3,650 meters to 1,070 meters before the plane vanished, fueling suspicions.
The aircraft was believed to be heading toward the Russian-controlled Latakia airbase, a stronghold for Assad and one of the few areas still under regime control. However, the sudden reversal of course raised questions about its destination. Flightradar cited potential data inaccuracies caused by the plane’s older transponder and regional GPS jamming but maintained that the trajectory data was “quite good.”
Unnamed Syrian sources told Reuters there is a “very high probability” that Assad was killed in the incident, though his presence on the flight remains unconfirmed. Egyptian journalist Khaled Mahmoud shared on social media that the crash seemed deliberate, supporting claims of a shootdown. Speculation also arose that the plane’s disappearance may have been an attempt to flee to safety amidst Damascus’ fall.
The disappearance coincided with significant rebel gains, as they captured Damascus, marking the end of the Assad family’s five-decade reign. Jubilant crowds celebrated in the streets, and rebel forces announced Assad’s overthrow on state television. This development, combined with uncertainty over Assad’s fate, signals a transformative moment for Syria as it faces the aftermath of its long-standing civil war.
