As per reports on Thursday (26 September), Nigerian troops have successfully neutralized over 65 terrorist leaders, commanders, and combatants during a major offensive operation across all theatres of operations in the country. The operation, which targeted terrorist leadership, is part of ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency efforts aimed at weakening terror networks. Among those eliminated were several high-profile leaders, including Munzir Arika, Sani Dilla, and Ameer Modu.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, highlighted the military’s strategy of prioritizing the elimination of terrorist leadership. Throughout the third quarter of the year, synchronized air and ground assaults were carried out, significantly diminishing the military capabilities of these terrorist groups. These operations have resulted in a sharp decline in the cohesion of terrorist forces.
In addition to the 65 leaders neutralized, the military reported a total of 1,937 terrorists killed, 2,782 suspects arrested, and 1,854 hostages rescued during the third quarter. The military also seized a substantial amount of weapons and ammunition, recovering over 43,000 rounds of ammunition and numerous arms. These actions are part of a broader effort to combat terrorism and criminal activities, including oil theft.
The military remains committed to maintaining pressure on terrorist groups until they are completely dismantled. Troops are actively pursuing and eliminating any threats, intending to destroy the infrastructure and leadership of terrorist organizations. The continued success of these operations has also contributed to a boost in Nigeria’s crude oil production, which is now reaching its target levels.
