A deep depression over Odisha has worsened the flood situation in the southern districts, particularly Malkangiri and Koraput. Continuous heavy rainfall has led to flooding in 560 villages, creating a crisis for residents. More than 1,700 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas to temporary shelters, according to the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC).
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has responded to the situation by assigning senior officials to oversee rescue and relief efforts. Among those tasked with managing the crisis are the Director General of Police (Fire Services) Sundhansu Sarangi and two other key officials. Rescue teams have been deployed to Malkangiri to handle the worsening conditions.
In Malkangiri Block, the heaviest rainfall was recorded at 253 mm, with several blocks receiving over 200 mm. Floodwaters have caused severe disruptions, with bridges overflowing and transportation networks cut off. Rescue teams are working tirelessly, having already rescued more than 60 villagers, though many remain stranded in flood-hit areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Districts including Ganjam, Koraput, and Puri are at high risk of additional flooding and infrastructure damage, raising concerns over the ongoing crisis and potential worsening conditions.
