More than 430,000 residents of Shangqiu City, located in central China’s Henan Province, have been impacted by severe rainfall brought by Typhoon Bebinca, local authorities announced on Tuesday (24 September). Heavy downpours struck most parts of the city between 8 a.m. (local time) on Tuesday ( 17 September) and 6 a.m. (local time) on Thursday (19 September), resulting in significant flooding across 69 townships, with rainfall amounts reaching up to 625.9 mm.
As of 6 p.m. (local time) on Monday (23 September), over 433,000 people had been affected by the storm, leading to the evacuation of 5,119 residents. Though the heavy rains have ceased, several areas in Shangqiu continue to experience waterlogging, and emergency response teams remain on alert.
Typhoon Bebinca, the 13th typhoon of 2024, made landfall in Shanghai on 16 September and is considered the most powerful storm to hit the city in 75 years. Despite the National Meteorological Center ceasing to track Bebinca at 11 p.m. on 18 September, its lingering effects have caused severe rainstorms in Henan and other regions. Local authorities are managing recovery and relief efforts as the situation stabilizes.
