According to the reports on Wednesday (18 December), five security personnel lost their lives in two separate terror attacks in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province within 24 hours. In Dera Ismail Khan, militants targeted a security forces vehicle with an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Zarkani area of Darban tehsil, killing three soldiers and injuring two others. The injured were taken to Combined Military Hospital Dera Ismail Khan, while authorities launched a rescue and search operation. The provincial governor condemned the attack and criticized the government’s inaction.
The second attack occurred at a police check post in the Gunnagar area of Chakesar tehsil in Shangla district. Armed militants launched a coordinated assault using heavy weapons, including rocket shells and hand grenades. Two police personnel, including an assistant sub-inspector, were killed, and three others sustained injuries. Funeral prayers were held with senior officials and local leaders in attendance.
Following the attacks, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Inspector General of Police praised the bravery of the martyred personnel and vowed to arrest the attackers. Security forces intensified operations in the affected areas to locate the militants responsible. The incidents have raised concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the province.
In response to the escalating violence, residents of Shangla protested at Alpuri Chowk, demanding immediate measures to restore peace and prevent further attacks. They warned of a sit-in if the government failed to act promptly. The attacks have heightened tensions and renewed calls for stronger counterterrorism efforts in the region.
