The Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Thursday (13 February), that President’s Rule has been imposed in Manipur following the resignation of Chief Minister Biren Singh. President Droupadi Murmu, after reviewing the governor’s report, declared that the state government could no longer function per the Constitution. Using her authority under Article 356, she assumed control of all state functions and powers vested in the governor.
The political situation in Manipur remains uncertain, as the ruling BJP has not yet appointed a new leader. Despite multiple rounds of discussions involving BJP’s northeast in-charge Sambit Patra and party legislators, no consensus has been reached. Patra has met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla twice in an effort to resolve the deadlock. Additionally, he held meetings with BJP MLAs, including Minister L Susindro and MLA Karam Shyam, to discuss leadership issues.
Opposition leaders, including Congress MLA Thokchom Lokeshwar, have questioned the purpose of Patra’s visit. Lokeshwar criticized Patra for failing to take the lead in appointing a new chief minister and accused him of stalling the assembly session. He argued that this delay serves to sideline key issues facing the state. Former Speaker Lokeshwar also pointed out that Patra had not made any public comments regarding the leadership crisis.
The last legislative assembly session in Manipur concluded on August 12, 2024. With no immediate resolution in sight, the BJP continues to struggle with internal disagreements over leadership. The imposition of President’s Rule further deepens the political uncertainty in the state. Meanwhile, the Centre is expected to play a key role in determining the next steps for Manipur’s governance.
