According to the reports on Thursday (5 December), a Russian ship fired warning shots at a German military helicopter during a routine surveillance mission in the Baltic Sea, German news agency DPA reported, citing defense officials. The ship reportedly used signal ammunition, typically reserved for emergencies, raising concerns about escalating tensions in the region.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock confirmed the incident during a NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels, labeling it part of Russia’s broader hybrid warfare strategy targeting European critical infrastructure and maritime security. Baerbock accused Russia of disrupting undersea cables and GPS channels and cited additional incidents involving tankers operating illegally to bypass sanctions.

The Baltic Sea region has seen heightened surveillance activity by NATO allies following recent damage to fiber-optic cables connecting Nordic countries. The incident is viewed as part of growing efforts to monitor and mitigate threats to vital infrastructure, including undersea pipelines and communication networks.

This confrontation comes as relations between Russia and NATO allies remain strained, with hybrid warfare tactics, including cyber-attacks and maritime confrontations, adding to the tension. The event highlights the fragile security environment in Europe and the ongoing need for vigilance in the Baltic Sea.
