The heavy rain expected for Tairāwhiti Gisborne, which is still in a “State of Emergency” as of 18 January 2023, may cause unstable hillsides, waterlogged terrain, and wrecked roads.
From 3 p.m. (local time) on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, until 9 a.m. (local time), Thursday, January 19, 2023, a heavy rain warning covering the area from Uawa/Tolaga Bay north has been issued.
It is predicted that 70-90mm of rain may occur during this time. Hence, leaders of the council and civil defense have issued a warning about more landslides and flooding-related transport delays.
According to MetService, significant rainfall could result in surface flooding as streams and rivers rise quickly. Slips are also a possibility, and road conditions can be risky.
Hence, residents are advised to remain vigilant.
