According to the reports on Monday (5 May), in a major counter-terrorism breakthrough, security forces uncovered a terrorist hideout in the forested Surankot area of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation led to the seizure of five improvised explosive devices (IEDs), two wireless radio sets, and three blankets. The joint effort by the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police was launched following specific intelligence inputs, highlighting a credible threat in the region.
The discovery comes just days after the devastating Pahalgam massacre that claimed 26 civilian lives, one of the deadliest attacks in the area in recent years. This raised alarm across security establishments, prompting heightened vigilance and search operations in sensitive regions. Officials believe the foiled plot could have led to further bloodshed had it not been intercepted in time.
Shortly after the hideout was discovered, the Pakistan Army reportedly initiated unprovoked firing across the Line of Control (LoC). Ceasefire violations were recorded during the night of May 4–5 in multiple sectors including Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor. These actions have intensified the already tense situation along the LoC, casting doubt on the sustainability of the 2021 ceasefire agreement.
Indian troops responded swiftly and proportionately to the firing, marking the 11th consecutive day of ceasefire breaches by Pakistan. The recurring violations and the recent terror activity have further escalated tensions between the two nations. Security forces remain on high alert in the region, continuing to monitor and act upon any threats to civilian safety and national security.
