According to the reports on Friday (13 December), Tropical cyclone Chido, currently located northeast of Madagascar, has intensified over the past 24 hours and is projected to reach Zimbabwe by Tuesday (17 December). The Meteorological Services Department (MSD), in collaboration with the Department of Civil Protection, is closely monitoring the storm’s movement and potential impact on the country.

The cyclone is expected to bring severe weather conditions, including strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall exceeding 70mm within 24 hours. Regions likely to be affected include Manicaland, Masvingo, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, Harare, and the Midlands. These areas may face significant weather-related hazards.

Authorities have warned of potential floods, rock falls, and mudflows due to the anticipated heavy rains. Residents in vulnerable regions are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions to ensure safety. Local emergency teams are on standby to respond to any incidents caused by the storm.

To minimize risks, the public is urged to avoid open spaces during the storm and secure roofs and other loose structures around their homes. The MSD and the Department of Civil Protection will provide regular updates as the cyclone progresses, ensuring that communities remain informed and prepared.
