According to the reports of Tuesday (06 January 2026), two Hindu men were killed in separate incidents within 24 hours in Bangladesh, underscoring a growing pattern of violence against religious minorities, especially the Hindu community. The first victim, 40-year-old Sarat Chakraborty Mani, was attacked with sharp weapons while running his grocery shop in Narsingdi district and later died from his injuries.
In the second incident, 38-year-old businessman and newspaper editor Rana Pratap Bairagi was shot dead in public in Monirampur Upazila of Jashore district. According to reports, three assailants arrived on a motorcycle, called him out of his ice factory, took him to a nearby lane, and shot him in the head before fleeing. Police have recovered the body, sent it for post-mortem, and said the motive and identities of the attackers are still under investigation.
These two killings are part of a wider and disturbing trend. In recent weeks, several other Hindu men have been killed in different parts of Bangladesh, including Khokon Chandra Das, who died after a mob attack, and Bajendra Biswas, who was shot dead by a colleague. Last December also saw multiple brutal incidents, including mob lynchings and killings over false blasphemy accusations.
Together, these cases point to an alarming rise in violence targeting minorities in Bangladesh. The continuing attacks have sparked concern and outrage among people and human rights organizations, who warn that the security situation for minority communities, particularly Hindus, is rapidly deteriorating under the current interim government.
