According to the reports on Thursday (14 November), Six members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State were hospitalized following an attack by suspected armed thugs in Idanre Local Government Area. The assault reportedly took place during a PDP gathering on Wednesday, only two days before the state’s governorship election, adding tension to an already charged political atmosphere.
Kennedy Peretei, the PDP’s spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating that some party members were targeted and injured during the gathering. However, he did not provide in-depth details about the attack. The violence in the ancient town of Idanre has raised concerns about security as the election approaches.
In response to the incident, the Ondo State Police Command launched a full investigation. Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the police spokesperson, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Oladipo Abayomi, held a peace meeting with leaders of the state’s two major political parties to defuse rising tensions.
The Commissioner has warned against any attempts to disrupt the peace, particularly with imminent elections. He emphasized the police’s commitment to holding those responsible accountable and to preventing further violence, reinforcing the message that the command will uphold peace before, during, and after the election.
