According to the reports on Friday (8 November), the recent Russian attack on the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia has resulted in the death toll doubling to eight, including an infant, with 42 others wounded. The regional governor confirmed the updated toll, which previously stood at four, and noted that among the dead is a one-year-old child. The attack caused significant damage, including impacts to a local hospital.
This latest assault is part of an escalation of Russian aerial strikes on Zaporizhzhia, an industrial hub in southeastern Ukraine. Earlier in the week, six people lost their lives in a strike on an industrial part of the city. Residents and officials fear that Zaporizhzhia is facing a continuous targeting pattern that could worsen in the coming months.
Analysts monitoring the conflict believe that the Kremlin may launch a full-scale offensive on Zaporizhzhia during the winter, aiming to secure further territorial control in the region. Though Russia claimed to annex the Zaporizhzhia region in late 2022, it still lacks full military control over significant parts of the area, leaving cities like Zaporizhzhia under constant threat.
Zaporizhzhia, a city with a pre-war population exceeding 700,000, lies approximately 35 kilometers from the nearest Russian position. The continued bombardments have raised concerns over potential displacement and the safety of civilians, as local and international officials call for greater support to defend against further incursions.
