A severe weather alert has been issued for the Attica region of Greece, including Athens, due to concerns over heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The alert, issued by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, will start at 3 pm and last until 6 pm on Wednesday, with disruptions to transport, business, and utilities expected. British tourists with holidays booked in the region could also face cancellations or delays.

The adverse weather is forecast to continue across much of Greece until at least September 21, particularly affecting northern and western areas. Orange warnings, indicating heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, have been issued for Central and West Macedonia, Epirus, and West Sterea, while a yellow warning has been issued for East Sterea, Evia, the Ionian Islands, and Thessaly.

In addition to rain and thunderstorms, strong winds, lightning, and possible hailstorms are expected to accompany the weather. Heavy downpours could lead to flooding, especially in low-lying areas or places with poor drainage systems. Landslides are also a concern in hilly or mountainous regions where saturated soil increases the risk.

Authorities are on high alert and may issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities. Floodwaters, debris, and ponding on roads could make travel dangerous, while flight delays and cancellations are likely at airports in affected regions. Travelers and residents are advised to remain cautious and stay updated on weather developments.
