According to the reports on Tuesday (3 December), Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar district engaged in a gunfire exchange with terrorists in the Harwan area on Monday evening (2 December, local time). The encounter began during a cordon and search operation (CASO) after receiving intelligence on terrorist presence in the mountainous region. The operation was intensified on Tuesday morning (3 December, local time), with security forces tightening the cordon to flush out the hiding terrorists.
This incident follows a series of deadly attacks in the region. On October 20, terrorists attacked a workers’ camp in Ganderbal, killing seven civilians. Just days later, on October 24, an Army vehicle was ambushed in Baramulla’s Gulmarg area, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers and two civilian porters. These incidents sparked widespread condemnation and underscored the escalating violence.
Another tragic attack occurred on November 2 when terrorists hurled a grenade at a crowded Sunday Market in Srinagar, killing a 42-year-old mother of three and injuring nine others. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the bloodshed, vowing that those responsible would face severe consequences and every innocent life lost would be avenged.
In response to the heightened violence, security forces have intensified operations against terrorists and their overground networks, including drug smugglers. Intelligence agencies report that drug trade profits are used to fund terrorist activities, with some drugs being distributed among local youth to manipulate them. The ongoing crackdown aims to dismantle these links and curb terrorism’s influence in the region.
