According to the reports on Thursday (2 January 2025), the “Jumped Deposit” scam has emerged as a serious threat to mobile money users, particularly those using Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platforms. Scammers initiate the fraud by depositing small, unsolicited amounts, typically between Rs 1,000 and Rs 5,000, into victims’ accounts. This unexpected deposit triggers curiosity, leading victims to check their banking app, where they are prompted to enter their UPI PIN. Unknowingly, this action authorizes a fraudulent withdrawal initiated by the scammers.
Tamil Nadu Police have issued a public advisory warning users against falling prey to this scam. They stress the importance of not rushing to verify unexpected deposits or entering UPI PINs without understanding the nature of the transaction. Scammers exploit quick responses and trust, making it critical for users to stay cautious and pause before reacting to such notifications.
To protect against the “Jumped Deposit” scam, users should take specific precautions. Delaying verification of unexpected deposits by 15-30 minutes can allow fraudulent withdrawal requests to expire. Inputting an incorrect UPI PIN, if fraud is suspected, can also cancel active transaction attempts linked to the scam. Additionally, enabling transaction alerts through SMS or email can help users monitor account activity in real time.
Users are advised to maintain strict confidentiality about their UPI credentials and directly contact their bank to verify unexpected deposits instead of relying on app notifications or messages from unknown sources. By staying alert and following these protective measures, users can safeguard themselves from falling victim to this deceptive financial scheme.
