According to the reports on Tuesday (24 December), fourteen people were killed in a violent attack by bandits on Ri Do village in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. The victims, predominantly Irigwe natives from neighboring Bassa LGA, are being mourned, with a mass burial organized by the community. A 32-year-old woman, Linda Moses, survived the attack and is receiving medical treatment for her injuries.
The Irigwe Development Association (IDA) confirmed the attack through its national publicity secretary, Sam Jugo. Upon hearing the news, Jugo dispatched an emissary to verify the incident, which confirmed the fatalities. Jugo expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and called for calm while urging authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The commissioner for information and communication, Musa Ashoms, also condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with the victims’ families. He called on security agencies to act decisively in apprehending those responsible and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The attack has left the Irigwe community in mourning as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of their loved ones during a time meant for festive celebrations. Community leaders and officials have called for swift and effective action to ensure peace and security in the area.
