The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia has apprehended six individuals in Ingushetia, a North Caucasus republic, on charges of belonging to an international terrorist organization. The suspects, all Russian citizens, were reportedly planning to launch attacks on local police and an Orthodox church, according to reports from Wednesday (28 August).
The arrests were made in the city of Nazran and the nearby village of Kantyshevo, approximately 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) north of Vladikavkaz in the neighboring republic of North Ossetia. During the operation, the FSB discovered a homemade explosive device, as well as components intended for its assembly. Additionally, firearms, bladed weapons, and materials featuring terrorist symbols were seized from the suspects.
Authorities also recovered manuals on urban and forest combat tactics, along with detailed instructions for assembling explosive and incendiary devices, which were stored on the suspects’ phones. The FSB noted that the detainees had “given confessions,” although no further details were provided.
These arrests come approximately two months after deadly attacks on a synagogue and an Orthodox church in Dagestan, another republic in the North Caucasus. Russia has witnessed a surge in armed attacks and prison uprisings linked to individuals affiliated with the Islamic State militant group, particularly following the Crocus City Hall mass killing in March.
The situation remains tense in the North Caucasus region, with security forces on high alert to prevent further terrorist activities.
