According to the reports on Wednesday (08 October), Hamas announced that it had exchanged lists of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners as part of a proposed swap deal, expressing optimism about the progress of talks in Egypt. The negotiations, held in Sharm el-Sheikh, focus on achieving a ceasefire, facilitating the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and finalizing the details of U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace initiative. While both sides agree on the need for progress, the timeline for implementing the first phase of the plan remains undecided.
A U.S. delegation including special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner joined the discussions, signaling Washington’s renewed push for an end to the Gaza conflict. Trump himself voiced optimism about the talks, coinciding with the second anniversary of the Hamas attack that triggered Israel’s military campaign. However, despite positive signals, officials from all parties advised caution, noting that significant disagreements persist.
Key regional mediators, including Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani and Turkey’s intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin, also participated in the ceasefire discussions. Hamas is demanding a permanent ceasefire, full withdrawal of Israeli troops, and the start of a reconstruction process led by a Palestinian technocratic administration. In contrast, Israel insists that Hamas must disarm before any long-term peace or rebuilding effort can proceed, a condition the group firmly rejects.
Meanwhile, Israel continues its offensive in Gaza, further deepening its international isolation. Global outrage has grown over the humanitarian crisis, with Gaza’s population largely displaced and suffering from severe food shortages. Rights experts and a U.N. inquiry have described Israel’s actions as genocidal, while Israel maintains it is acting in self-defense following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and resulted in 251 hostages being taken. Gaza authorities report that around 67,000 people have been killed in the Israeli assault.
