According to the reports on Tuesday (7 January), Two children, aged seven and 14, in Nagpur have tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), raising the total number of cases to 10 in India. The children were admitted to a private hospital on January 3 after presenting symptoms like fever and cough. Upon testing, it was confirmed that they were infected with HMPV, which affects both the upper and lower respiratory tract, causing symptoms similar to those of Covid-19. So far, cases have been reported in Bengaluru, Gujarat, Chennai, Kolkata, and Nagpur.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda assured the public that HMPV is not a new virus. He stated that it was first identified in 2001 and has been circulating worldwide for years. The virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets, affecting people of all age groups. He emphasized that the health systems in India remain vigilant, and there is no cause for concern, as authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also addressed concerns about the HMPV virus. He reassured the public that the state government is taking all necessary measures to stay alert. Pathak highlighted that the government is prepared to manage any situation related to the virus and that no one should panic. The government is working proactively to ensure public health safety.
The government has not issued specific guidelines for HMPV, but public health experts have emphasized heightened surveillance and preparedness. Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, Public Health Director, mentioned that while the virus is moderately transmissible, it is not highly contagious. Extensive preparations are being made for the upcoming Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, with a focus on addressing any health challenges, including HMPV.
