The United States is currently monitoring the increase in cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections following reports of a surge in China. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has acknowledged the rise in cases but has downplayed any immediate concerns regarding the virus. The US is closely observing the situation, which has raised attention across various countries in the region.
Indonesia has taken proactive measures by monitoring flights arriving from China and Malaysia due to the rising number of HMPV cases. Travelers arriving in Bali are now required to fill out a health declaration form three days prior to their arrival. This measure is part of the government’s efforts to track and control the potential spread of the virus within the region.
Singapore also reported a spike in HMPV infections towards the end of 2024. The health authorities indicated that the increase in cases was in line with expectations, attributing it to higher social gatherings and travel during the holiday season. Despite the rise, officials emphasized that the situation was not outside normal expectations during this period of increased mobility.
The virus, which causes flu or cold-like symptoms, has been most prevalent in northern Chinese provinces this winter, with a notable impact on children. Dr. Sanjaya Senanayake, an infectious disease expert from The Australian National University, highlighted the importance of China sharing timely information on the virus to help manage and contain the spread more effectively.
