A magnitude-6.8 earthquake rocked Morocco on Friday night (08 September) (local time), killing at least 632 people and injuring 329 others.
According to preliminary assessments, at least 296 people were killed and 153 were injured.
According to a local official, most of the deaths occurred in remote highland areas. In a televised statement on the death toll, the Interior Ministry said the quake had struck the provinces of Al Haouz, Ouarzazate, Marrakesh, Azilal, Chichaoua, and Taroudant.
The epicenter of the tremor was at a relatively shallow depth of 18.5 kilometers and happened roughly 72 kilometers southwest of Marrakesh and 56 kilometers west of the town of Oukaimeden shortly after 11 p.m. (local time).
