According to the reports on Monday (28 April), tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated after Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) for the fourth consecutive night, targeting army posts in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara and Poonch districts. Indian forces responded swiftly to the unprovoked small arms fire, and fortunately, no casualties were reported. The repeated violations have alarmed authorities, especially after a deadly terrorist attack recently claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local resident in Pahalgam.
Following the attack, Indian troops along the LoC have been placed on the highest alert, with strict orders to respond firmly to any aggression. The latest ceasefire violations have disrupted the relative calm maintained since the 2021 ceasefire agreement, prompting fears of a wider conflict. Border residents have begun preparing underground bunkers and harvesting crops early in anticipation of further escalation.
In response to the terrorist attack, India has launched a series of tough measures against Pakistan, including expelling Pakistani military attaches, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, and closing the Attari land-transit post. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to track down and punish every terrorist and their supporters responsible for the Pahalgam killings. Meanwhile, Pakistani authorities have retaliated by suspending all bilateral agreements, including the 1972 Shimla Agreement, and closing their airspace to Indian carriers.
Security forces have intensified operations in South Kashmir, demolishing the homes of suspected terrorists, and police have released sketches of three suspects linked to the Pahalgam attack. As actions on both sides harden, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has urged caution, warning that while terrorists must be punished, innocent civilians must not suffer as a result. He emphasized that the people of Kashmir overwhelmingly reject terrorism and should be protected during this tense period.
