According to the reports on Monday (7 April), an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza killed Palestinian journalist Yousef al-Faqawi and another man, while injuring nine others, including six journalists. The strike occurred around 2 a.m. outside Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, igniting a media tent used by local reporters. Israeli forces also targeted areas near Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, injuring three people.
The Israeli military stated it had aimed at a Hamas militant but did not offer specific details about the strike that hit the media tent. While Israel insists its operations are intended to avoid civilian casualties, it continues to face criticism for conducting airstrikes in densely populated civilian zones. The local journalists’ union and medics have confirmed the casualties and condemned the targeting of journalists.
Overnight airstrikes across Gaza resulted in further casualties. Nasser Hospital received 13 additional bodies from separate bombings, including six women and four children. Al-Aqsa Hospital reported two deaths and three injuries from a strike on a residential home. These attacks have added to the mounting civilian toll in the ongoing conflict.
Israel has significantly increased its territorial control within Gaza since renewing its offensive against Hamas. It now occupies more than 50% of the strip, including a corridor dividing north and south Gaza, which human rights groups warn may signal intentions of long-term control. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that even after defeating Hamas, Israel plans to maintain security authority in Gaza and continue pressuring Palestinians to leave.
