According to the reports on Thursday (20 March), Hamas has condemned Israel’s ground operation in central Gaza, calling it a serious violation of the ceasefire agreement. The group accused the United States of providing political cover for Israel’s military actions, which have intensified across the region. Israeli forces launched predawn attacks in both northern and southern Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 71 Palestinians, including women and children.
The latest casualties add to the growing death toll reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry, which now stands at approximately 436 Palestinians, including 183 children, since Israel broke the ceasefire on Tuesday (18 March). As the conflict escalates, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned of a broader military campaign. He signaled the possibility of an expanded offensive in the occupied West Bank while continuing intense military operations against Hamas in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the Houthis have reportedly launched a missile toward Israel, further complicating the regional situation. Amid the rising violence, Hamas has communicated to mediators that they are willing to accept any proposal for the release of Israeli hostages, provided it includes a return to the ceasefire. This statement suggests a possible opening for renewed negotiations despite ongoing hostilities.
Hamas sources also indicated that the group did not outright reject the ceasefire-hostage framework proposed by US envoy Steve Witkoff. Instead, they claim to have accepted it on the condition that it ensures a resumption of the ceasefire. With heavy fighting persisting, diplomatic efforts may still play a role in de-escalating the conflict if both sides find common ground.
